3 Tips to Prevent Your Director of IT from Hating Their Job

CNBC recently published an article on the Top 10 Most Hated Jobs in the United States, and “Director of Information Technology” topped the list.

most hated jobFirst, we’d like to say that it’s obvious that no one at CNBC watches Dirty Jobs on the Discovery Channel, which provides an infinite source of jobs that must provide more dissatisfaction than being an IT professional.

Second, this article is indicative of a larger problem with the IT profession – the only time you may notice your IT professional is when something breaks. Information technology, which provides the platform for your business to grow, should be an integral part of your business strategy.

To help keep your business running smoothly, here are 3 easy tips to keep your IT staff healthy and happy:

  1. Involve them early and often in the process: IT isn’t an “after the fact” function. Instead, IT works best when they are involved early in the planning stages of your business. Involve your IT staff in strategic discussions, ask their opinion, and allow them the room to offer recommendations on how you can better grow your business.
  2. Support professional development: IT is one of the few professions that are quickly and easily outdated on a regular basis. To ensure that your business is built on industry best-practices and advanced technologies, support the professional development desires of your IT staff. This could include courses on technologies, business optimization, leadership, executive strategy, and more.
  3. Get them out of the weeds: Every position in your business has its administrative tasks, but no more so than your IT staff. If they’re spending too much time working with your employees on printer issues, offload some of that administrative work to outsourced IT professionals. Not only will this help answer support calls faster, but will also allow them to reallocate themselves to more strategic growth initiatives.

And finally, listen when your IT staff speaks. Like your finance team, your IT staff is incredibly aware of what your business can and cannot do, and can help you build a pragmatic, strategic solution to achieve your business goals.
